For anyone who took traditional piano lessons as a child, do you remember how much you loved playing scales when you were growing up? For me, scales were something that I had to play but never once enjoyed. I wasn't really ever sure why it was necessary or what the purpose was. I only knew that at the beginning of every lesson, there was an obligatory scale.
As a teacher, my greatest desire was that my students would love and enjoy playing piano. I didn't want them to feel bogged down with mundane exercises that they didn't enjoy and likely would never practice. The goal was to make learning piano engaging and fun.
Welcome to the FOUNDATIONS Series, a 7 volume comprehensive compilation of scales, chords, inversions, arpeggios and other fundamental exercises for piano. The fun begins when you add the associated duet part. Try using some different instrumentation to engage multiple students in playing together, which strengthens rhythmic understanding and encourages band or orchestral collaboration.
Each exercise is written in four different versions, and are specifically designed to give you, the teacher, complete flexibility in customizing a learning program for each individual student using the reproduction license, which is included with purchase of the books. To learn more, see the FOUNDATIONS Licensing statement.
These exercises will inspire you and your students to have fun together while learning these essential foundations:
